    Hi everyone!

I am a graphic designer that wants to switch careers to creative strategy. I’m a little unsure of how to go about it. Does anyone know what type of roles I should be applying for if I want to learn and grow as a strategist? I am coming from a junior-mid level design background and not sure if I need to do an internship or if I can jump into a junior strategist role? There seem to not be many lower-level roles available. Am I looking at the wrong job titles? I want to get my foot in the door, but not sure where to start in terms of applying for jobs. My first real strategy exposure is Sweathead’s fundamentals program and some things I’ve learned on my own/in college with my advertising degree. Any advice? I want to stop applying for graphic designer roles and move onto strategy!

  • What are some junior-level roles I should apply for to become a strategist?

I have been aggressively interviewing since December 12th. Do you mind if I pass on your name if I hear of any Jr. Strategist Roles opening up?

Hi Joyce. There isn’t one simple answer or shortcut for this. So much of it is about luck so you want to keep your options open and try all the various paths, including:

    1. Trying to switch into the role at your existing company,

    2. Internships,

    3. Applying for jobs, but, importantly,

    4. Networking with people and potential hirers.

Your CV and portfolio need to smell a bit like a strategist’s (ie problem framing, research, audience understanding, distillation of a lot of information, etc), too.

Thank you for your advice Mark! Do you have any examples or maybe guidelines on how to tailor my CV and portfolio to be like a strategist? My CV and portfolio definitely have more graphic design than creative strategy and I feel like I need to do an overhaul to include more creative strategy.
